How Long Do Landscape Lighting Systems Last?

It is a reasonable question to ask before spending several thousand dollars on anything. Landscape lighting is no exception. The honest answer depends entirely on how the system was built.
The Short Answer
A professional-grade landscape lighting system — built with solid brass fixtures, properly sized low-voltage wiring, and a quality transformer — should last 15 to 25 years with normal maintenance. Some systems exceed that significantly. A budget system built with aluminum fixtures, undersized wire, and a cheap transformer may begin showing problems within 3 to 5 years.
The Four Factors That Determine Lifespan
- Fixture Material
This is the single biggest variable. Solid brass fixtures resist corrosion, handle temperature swings, and maintain their structural integrity for decades in a Texas climate. Aluminum fixtures degrade more quickly — particularly when exposed to irrigation water, clay soil, and the humidity North Texas delivers in summer.
- Transformer Quality
The transformer is the heart of the system. A quality low-voltage transformer — properly sized for the total wattage of the system with room to grow — will run for 15 or more years without issues. A cheap or undersized transformer is the number-one cause of early system failure. It overheats, trips breakers, and eventually burns out.
- Wire and Connection Quality
Low-voltage landscape lighting systems run on direct-burial wire buried a few inches below the surface. Proper wire gauge, quality connectors, and correct burial depth all affect longevity. Undersized wire causes voltage drop, which dims fixtures and strains the transformer.
- Maintenance
Landscape lighting systems are low-maintenance by design, but they are not no-maintenance. Annual checkups — verifying fixture alignment, cleaning lenses, checking connections, and adjusting timer schedules seasonally — extend system life and catch small issues before they become expensive ones.
Expected Lifespan By System Type
Brass fixtures plus quality transformer plus professional install: 15 to 25+ years Aluminum fixtures plus mid-grade transformer: 8 to 15 years Box-store system, DIY install: 2 to 6 years Solar stake lights: 1 to 3 years
What About Led?
Modern landscape lighting systems use integrated LED technology — the fixture and light source are one unit. Quality LED landscape fixtures are rated for 50,000 hours or more. At 8 hours per night, that is over 17 years of run time. In practice, the fixture housing and wiring will determine system lifespan more than the LED module itself.
Signs Your System Is Near End Of Life
- Multiple fixtures failing within a short period
- Transformer tripping breakers or running hot
- Visible corrosion on fixture bodies or stems
- Persistent voltage drop despite transformer adjustments
- Wire insulation becoming brittle or cracking when disturbed
We regularly see brass systems from the early 2000s that are still performing well — just needing a few connection refreshes and a transformer upgrade. That is a 20-year system. We almost never see that with aluminum.
The Bottom Line
Buy quality once. A brass system installed by a professional is not a 5-year investment — it is a 20-year investment. The math works out strongly in favor of doing it right the first time. A system that lasts that long means you never have to think about it again — it just works, every night, year after year.
